Eight Healthy Weight Loss Tips

Most people who have struggled with their weight have tried a number of strategies to shed excess pounds. If you adopt a “slow but steady” attitude, you will be more likely to keep the weight off over the long term. To help you achieve the goal of safe, permanent weight loss, please consider the following tips:

  1. Drink Water - Make an effort to drink eight glasses of water per day. It is important to your health to stay well hydrated, whether you are trying to lose weight or not. If you are trying to lose weight, try to drink a glass of water 15 or 20 minutes before each meal. You will find that it takes less food to make you feel “full”.

  2. Eat Regularly - Skipping meals may seem like a good idea when trying to lose weight. If you resort to this strategy, you are more likely to eat a larger meal later in the day to make up for it. Skipping meals also lowers your blood sugar, making you crave sweets. Instead, eat smaller meals more often to keep your blood sugar at a constant level.
  3. Include Fruits and Vegetables - Not only are fruits and vegetables good for you, they are an important source of fiber. It is relatively easy to add these vitamin-rich foods to your diet. Add some fruit to your morning cereal or make a fruit salad for dessert. Make a point of including a salad with your lunch or dinner most days.
  4. Substitute Whole Grain Products for White Flour Ones - If you like bread or bagels, choose whole-wheat over white. Whole-wheat pasta is also available. Substitute brown rice for the white variety. There is a slight difference in taste, but you will quickly get used to it.
  5. Get Regular Exercise - You do not have to join a gym to get fit. Make a point of going for a brisk walk every other day. As your level of fitness improves, you can increase the time you are exercising. To avoid boredom, include a variety of physical activities in your exercise routine. Swimming, cycling, weight training and gardening are also good choices. The point is to get your heart beating faster several times a week.
  6. Portion Sizes are Important - Restaurants are notorious for serving large portions. There are a couple of ways to deal with this. Feel free to order an item from the appetizer portion of the menu as your main course. Add a clear soup or a salad and you have a complete meal. You can also order something from the main menu and ask for a carry-out container to take part of it home. The leftovers can be reheated for lunch or dinner the next day.
  7. Get Enough Sleep - A number of us are chronically sleep-deprived. Make a point of getting enough rest. Fatigue will cause stress to your body. It is harder to make good choices about our eating habits when we are tired. We tend to want to load up on sugar and/or caffeine.
  8. There are No “Bad” Foods - If you decide to eliminate all the foods that you really enjoy from your diet, you will be setting yourself up to fail in your quest to lose weight. No food is inherently “bad”. Some foods are healthier than others. If you choose healthier food most of the time, you are on the right track to safe, permanent weight loss. Do have a small portion of something you crave every now and then.

By incorporating these tips into your weight loss regime, you stand a much better chance of reaching your goal of a healthy weight. It will take time to get the weight off, so be sure to be patient with the process. The end result will be worth the effort.
