With warmer weather approaching, a number of people are interested in getting in shape before they hit the beach. It is possible to shed some pounds before swimsuit season begins. Just be sure that you make smart choices if you decide to give your body a makeover.
Start Early
By starting early in the year, you give yourself more time to reach your goals. As always when trying to improve your appearance, keep in mind that gradual changes and slow, steady weight loss are the ways to go. Now is not the time to go on a crash diet.
Aim for Steady Weight Loss
Strive to lose no more than two pounds per week. Even two pounds is a pretty aggressive weight loss goal. A more reasonable one would be to lose one pound per week. If you lose weight more rapidly than two pounds per week, you will lose much-needed muscle as well as fat.
Eat Well
It might seem like an attractive option to severely restrict your caloric intake in an attempt to get in shape for bathing suit season. If you eat less than 500 calories each day, your body thinks that you are starving. Your metabolism may actually slow down in an attempt to conserve resources to wait out the “famine”. In addition, you may experience irritability and food cravings by adopting this approach.
A better approach is to choose lower-fat foods more often. Be sure to include a variety of foods and limit your intake of processed food. Eat lean protein, whole grain products, and fruits and vegetables.
Exercise
While regular exercise will certainly help you get in shape for summer, it’s not a good idea to try to become a world-class athlete the first week. If you are not used to exercising regularly, do take it easy. By starting slowly, you will be less likely to injure yourself.
Walking is a good activity to start with if you have been a couch potato all winter. If you are used to working out regularly, try increasing the intensity of your workout or try something new. If you are a member at a gym, book a few sessions with a personal trainer to make sure you are working out at the right intensity for your fitness level.
Do add some strength training to your fitness routine. Lifting weights three times per week will build muscle and help you achieve the toned look you want to achieve. You should be lifting enough that the targeted muscle is tired by the time you finish your set.
When you start exercising and doing weight training on a regular basis, you will start to see results in about thirty days. People who exercise regularly are able to focus better and are better able to deal with stress. They tend to have a more positive outlook.
If you cannot look perfect by the time swimsuit season arrives, do go to the beach anyway. Choose a suit in a flattering color and style. Remember that the most attractive qualities you can take with you are a bright smile and a positive attitude.
