A number of people decide to lose those extra pounds once and for all each year. We all enjoy reading about weight loss success stories, especially if the person has lost a great deal of weight. How do these weight-loss success stories come about? The answer lies in motivation. It is not enough to get motivated to lose weight, we must be able to stay motivated in order to reach the goal of permanent weight loss.
Losing Weight for the Right Reasons
One secret to motivating one’s self to lose weight is to have the right mental attitude. If someone feels they need to lose weight, they often do not have a good sense of self-esteem. Instead of treating yourself as someone who is unworthy, why don’t you turn that around and decide that you are going to improve your eating habits because you are a unique and valuable person who deserves to enjoy good health?
If you do not like and value yourself, you are more likely to either make poor dietary choices or to overeat. The more you eat, the worse you feel about yourself. You tend to eat more because you feel badly about yourself. This can become a vicious circle. You need to break the cycle and start making better choices.
Keep Your Expectations Realistic
If you are honest with yourself, you will admit that the excess weight you are interested in losing did not go on your body overnight. It is unrealistic, then, to expect that you will lose twenty pounds in two weeks! This will likely be a long-term project for you. By keeping your expectations realistic and planning on losing between one and two pounds a week, you will be more likely to stay motivated.
Celebrate Small Victories
Just because it will take a period of time to lose weight does not mean that you cannot treat yourself along the way. Decide that you will give yourself a reward after you reach a certain goal. For example, this could be five, ten or twenty pounds - whatever is right for you. Make sure that the reward is something meaningful to you. You may want to treat yourself to a massage, a facial, or a pedicure. All of these options can be enjoyed no matter where you are on your weight loss journey. By having something to look forward to, you will be more likely to stay motivated as well.
It is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
Everyone would like to find a magic pill, drink, or shot to make excess pounds magically fall off of our bodies. Unfortunately, it does not work that way in real life. Expect that achieving your goal to lose weight is a process that will take some time. There are no quick fixes.
Having said that, there will be times when you will fall off the wagon, so to speak. You will choose to have that piece of chocolate cake at a family birthday party. You may even have a day (or even longer) when you stray from your goal of losing weight. If this should happen, just get back on track again as soon as you can.
If you keep these suggestions in mind, it will be much easier to get motivated and stay motivated to lose weight. The process may take a bit of time but the result will be well worth the effort!
