Making the Commitment to Lose Weight

If you want to lose weight, you need to be committed to your goal. A number of people consider going on a diet to be a temporary situation; after they have lost the weight they can go back to their old eating habits. To lose weight and keep it off, you need to commit to a new lifestyle.

Permanent Changes

The changes that you need to make to your eating habits must be considered permanent changes. This does not mean that you can never treat yourself to a cheeseburger with everything, or have a slice of chocolate cake. You can enjoy these foods on an occasional basis.

Many people find that when they start eating better, the cravings for high-fat foods actually decrease. Since you are focusing on making permanent changes, you do not have to give yourself a complete diet overhaul all at once. Start with a few small changes and then add to them over time.

You may want to switch to a diet soft drink, or add less sugar and cream to your coffee. Add some fresh fruit to your cereal in the morning instead of adding sugar. Choose to eat a salad instead of fries as a side dish more often. Eat meat that has been broiled or grilled instead of fried. Over time, these choices will become easier for you.

Use Visualization Techniques

When professional athletes and captains of industry set goals for themselves, they visualize what they want to achieve in great detail. The more time and energy they spend picturing what it will be like to reach their particular goal, the more likely it is that they will be able to reach it.

Picture yourself feeling slim and fit. Imagine in detail what it will be like to walk with confidence in shorts or a swimsuit. You may even want to plan out the new wardrobe you will need once you reach your goal weight. By having a picture in your mind of your ultimate goal (in this case, achieving a healthy weight), you will be able to stay committed to performing the actions necessary to reach your goal.

A Positive Outlook

Once you start doing the steps necessary to lose weight and improve your health, something wonderful will start to happen. You will carry yourself a bit straighter, and there will be a spring in your step. Your outlook on life will improve, and you will find that you are treating yourself better.

It will become easier to make better choices about what you choose to eat. When it comes down to it, the person who is responsible for what you put in your mouth is you. Once you make the commitment to yourself to lose weight, you will start to value yourself a lot more.

You will be able to be more assertive because you like yourself a lot better. In changing how you feel about yourself, you will also change how you relate to others. Other people will respond to you in a more positive way, as well.

By making a firm commitment to yourself to lose weight, a whole new world will open up for you. It is important to understand that this will need to be a permanent change in lifestyle and habits. Help yourself stay on track by visualizing the result. Use your new positive outlook to spur you on to success in other areas of your life!
